There's been quite a buzz in the Enlisted community about mortars. Some players swear by them, while others think they’re utterly useless. So, what's the real deal? Why do some players find these mortar squads so effective?

The Great Mortar Debate

Firstly, if you hear players or streamers saying, “Don’t use this weapon,” or “that gun is trash,” I would tend to ignore them. You need to try it for yourself. Find out if mortars fit your playstyle. Learn how to use them effectively, and then decide if they’re worth your time.

Many players who dismiss mortars likely haven’t taken the time to master them. They may have tried and failed to get kills, leading them to label them as useless. But as many Redditors have pointed out, when used correctly, mortars can be game-changers.

Effective Strategies for Mortar Squads

Here are some tried-and-true methods to help you get the most out of your mortar squads:

  1. Predict Enemy Movement: After a few matches, you’ll start to get a feel for where enemies tend to gather. Aim just behind the objective. Infantry often stacks up as they approach, so if the objective is 100 metres away, aim for about 110 metres. You’ll find plenty of targets.

  2. Creeping Barrage: Try a creeping barrage. Drop mortars at 100m, 110m, 120m, 130m, and 140m, moving towards the enemy spawn. This method can catch enemies off guard.

  3. Double Up on Engineers: Use both engineer slots in your squad. Having two engineers allows you to deploy an extra 200 HE rounds. This keeps your operation going, even if one engineer gets taken out.

  4. Utilise Intel: Just like in a real army, artillery and mortars work best with good intel. Have a friend mark enemy spawns or groups of infantry. Use your mic to communicate what you see: “This is the enemy spawn here, and there’s a road where loads of guys are gathering.”

  5. Solo Player Strategy: Don’t have helpful friends? No problem! Switch to a rifleman, leave your squad in place, and manually ping your targets. Mark them with RB, then switch back to your mortar guy and unleash hell. This gives you the exact range on the marker, making it easy to dial in.

  6. Fortify Your Position: If your squad keeps getting blown up, dig in with your engineers. Create a fortified mortar position. Use your shovel to dig a quick hole, surround it with sandbags and ammo boxes, then jump in and keep blasting.

  7. Smoke Shells for Tactical Advantage: Once your HE rounds are spent, smoke shells can be a lifesaver. They blind tanks, snipers, and machine guns, and create a smoke column for your team to advance. Just be cautious not to place smoke too close to the enemy, as it can help them advance. And yes, smoke rounds can even kill if they hit close enough!

  8. Danger Close Tactics: Want to spice things up? Use mortars on the front line with a “danger close” method. Move up with your team and mark enemy positions as you see them. By using mortars at a minimum range of 50m, you can clear out groups of enemies right in front of you.

Try these strategies and see how mortars can change the tide of battle. Even if you don’t rack up kills immediately, they can push enemies back and make the game easier for your team.

Are Mortars Best for Defensive Maps or Attacking?
