Enlisted is a realistic tactical shooter set in WW2 for Xbox, PlayStation and Windows PC. Players can take control of customised squads with various roles and equipment such as engineer, radio operator, mortars etc.

If you enjoy Hell Let Loose but find it a bit of a walking simulator then Enlisted is perhaps a better choice with a similar level of realism but slightly more dynamic play. Players can choose whether they want to deploy in a tank, plane, infantry or light armour then get straight into the battle.

One area that causes issues for many players however is the defensive based maps such as Confrontation and Invasion on defense mode. Players can often rack up 100 or so kills easily enough but still unable to stem the tide and actually win the game.

Which infantry classes are most useful on defensive maps in Enlisted?

Engineer

The engineer is the strongest infantry soldier in defense maps as they can physically change the battlefield with fortifications and barriers. They can also build rally points bringing the entire army into key locations.

Radio operator

The radio operator is a key class to use in defense maps for calling in artillery strikes. Attach them to your assault teams to clear out the objective before your soldiers reach the area. Use the standard artillery strike rather than the airstrike - takes less time and more effective.

Assaulter

The main task for the defending army is clearing out the objective then holding it. For this you will need assault teams with SMG's to get in close and clear out the enemy soldiers.

Machine Gunner

Machine guns are useful for dealing with swarms of infantry. Use the mount weapon option (click right stick) to deploy the bipod and remove the recoil. Ideally you want to be inside the objective looking towards the enemy spawn point ready to hose down any soldiers that try to flood the objective.

Which equipment is most effective to achieve victories in these defensive maps?

The three key pieces of equipment that can win the entire game for you on defensive maps are the engineer's hammer, barbed wire and shovel.

Shovel - the most under used and highly effective melee weapon?

The shovel is perhaps the least utilised weapon in Enlisted. Very rarely used but it can create real problems for the enemy.

Many players do not realise that Enlisted is not a fixed map like on Call of Duty or Battlefield. It can be dug out and reshaped in a similar way to Minecraft when using the shovel.

You can dig holes for tanks to fall into, make trenches to defend a position and hide your soldiers, even tunnel your way towards an objective keeping out of sight.

Engineer's Hammer

The engineer's hammer is perhaps the most useful tool equipped in any defensive map on Enlisted. You can use it to create rally points to bring the rest of the players closer to the action, bringing victories and additional XP.

Often neglected however and extremely useful on defense is the ability to create fortifications. You can put down sandbags to hide behind, effectively making walls wherever you want. Tank traps created by the engineer are massive iron obstacles that will block a tank's path and are difficult to destroy.

Using the engineers hammer you can also build fixed gun positions - machine gun nests and AT cannons. When placed correctly these can stop the enemy in their tracks.

The engineer's hammer is also responsible for creating the single most effective piece of kit that can literally win any defensive map.

Barbed Wire

Thankfully, many players have not yet realised the effectiveness of barbed wire because this stuff is an absolute nightmare.

Literally one piece of barbed wire placed in the right place can win the entire game for you.

When holding any objective there will usually be one main entrance, a big door where all the enemy troops will soon come charging through.

By placing one piece of barbed wire across this entrance and covering it with your troops, you can make entry through this doorway completely impossible. Anybody charging it gets stuck in the barbed wire and shot. Anybody approaching to try and dismantle it will be shot by your troops.

This forces the enemy around the long way which will often mean walking past all your other squads and defensive positions.

Important tips when placing barbed wire in Enlisted

Always place it on the enemy side, closest to the red arrow on the map - do not block your own supply of troops into the objective.

Place barbed wire just outside the objective area if possible, preventing players getting into the circle.

Block off choke points such as doorways, windows, and gaps in walls where troops will likely enter.

Always man the defenses by placing either yourself or soldiers near the barbed wire watching out for sneaky players trying to creep up and dismantle the fortifications.

Putting it all together to cause havoc

When you combine all these different defensive tools together you can create quite a fearsome set of fortifications to slow the enemy down and kill them off.

For example you may have a trench dug across the entrance with all your soldiers placed inside, blasting anyone who comes close - using the shovel.

On the front edge of this you can place barbed wire to stop enemies jumping in the hole or getting through to the objective.

Making further use of the engineer's hammer you can add iron tank traps to keep vehicles out and protect your barbed wire from bombs. Sandbags keep troops protected and if you want to be really evil you can setup machine gun nests and AT guns covering the approach and literally mow down everyone that gets close.

This is providing you have enough time for preparations. With a teammate covering you it is easier and crouching behind cover helps to avoid being blasted while you are waving your hammer about.

However most of the time on Enlisted you will only get chance to lay one single piece of barbed wired before your engineer is ruthlessly shot. Often this will be enough to win the whole battle though, as you block the key route into the target area.

Next time you have an engineer in your squad, try it out - rush to the front line and set up those defenses.
