One of the most popular eras for realistic tactical shooters is a WW2 setting. There's no laser guided missiles locking on or thermal scopes (normally).

The battles seem more fair and balanced, based around skill rather than who has the most broken weapon setup.

These are the top 3 WWII shooters on console reviewed by Sprout Land:

  1. Hell Let Loose

Hell Let Loose is a hyper realistic and strategic shooter. If you are looking for more of a war simulation then HLL is a good pick.

At first it can seem quite daunting and difficult. However, once you get to grips with the basic roles and where to place garrisons and outposts, how supplies work and engineers etc, the game can be quite rewarding.

It helps if your team are working together and communicating through the very advanced comms system with multiple channels for your squad, officers and proximity chat. The last one is particularly useful for shouting "medic!" and helpful things like that to any nearby teammates not lumbered with you in their squad.

With a good overall commander and a few squad leaders who are cooperating with the main command, it works very well and you can have a good game.

If you have no commander or very little communication or cooperation between squads, the whole thing is going to turn into a disaster pretty quickly.

When it's going well you can have a very engaging and immersive WW2 experience on Hell Let Loose. Commanders drop airstrikes and supplies, infantry work together to take out enemy armour.

For some however it could be too realistic, with the balance between realism and fun definitely shifted towards the realism side in this title. If you don't know what you are doing, it could be accurately described as a "walking simulator". You wander about towards the front line then inevitably get shot from some unknown position.

Once you practice the basic functions however, it starts to make more sense. You'll be heading up a squad, setting down garrisons for the whole team to spawn on, and relaying orders from the command network to your ragtag team in the squad chat - whilst passing information back up the chain - "my guys just spotted a tank on the main road up there, I've marked the location...ok that's fine now, my AT soldier has dealt with it so we pushing onto the objective now. Can you send a recon plane over that treeline?"

When you have one or two squad commanders who are communicating and a decent overall commander, the whole thing can run like clockwork and it is a joy to behold.

  1. Battlefield V

Please note - this game should really be in 1st place as the all round best WW2 shooter produced. This list is looking at best WW2 shooters to play online in 2026 however. With the slightly dwindling numbers this has made BFV a little bit more tricky to get into an active server, and you may need to queue for a minute or two.

Other than that however, the player base is still there and games have been going strong on there since its release in 2018. It is amazing that you can not only hop back into this title from over 7 years ago, but furthermore it actually looks like the sequel to the game that followed.

Dynamic and impressive battlefield

Battlefield V is one of the most visually impressive and immersive WW2 shooters. Whether you are soaring over the battlefield in a dogfight or getting up close and personal in a muddy trench whacking someone with a shovel, BFV provides you with an amazing vista of sights and sounds that transport you back into the boots of our grandparents and great grandparents, giving you some idea of what it must have been like with the stunning realism and dynamic atmosphere that truly captures the chaos and abject terror of WW2.

Compared to the following game in the series BF2042, Battlefield V was made more special by the real world locations that were painstakingly depicted in great detail. So you could be attacking a thin peninsula and making your way up craggy cliffs, or peering through your sniper scope, watching as the dust and sand obscured your target on the other side of a huge chasm separated by a stone bridge.

These real world locations with huge attention to detail were much more enjoyable to battle across, presenting tactical challenges and interested ways in which the battle would pan out. The later BF2042 was a flat, boring mess in comparison - some large open world with one huge square building like it had been made by a member of the public using a map editor.

Thankfully the most recent Battlefield 6 has seen a return to form with fully destructable buildings and environments, and more impressive looking maps. It finally feels more like the original BF3 - 5. You can read the full review of Battlefield 6 here.

Gritty down to earth realism

Battlefield V was not characterised by large scale building collapses or shifting environments as witnessed in games such as BF4. The gameplay on Battlefield V shines the most when it is at it's grittiest. At times an artillery round or stray bomb from the air will tear up a huge crater in the earth and often this will be the only place of respite as you dive into the mud and use this dip in the land as your only cover, with rounds and explosions rocking the world around you.

In these moments Battlefield V captures the desperate struggle that was WW2. Well worth checking out if you are looking for the most impressive, visually dynamic and gripping WW2 experience.

  1. Enlisted

Enlisted is an excellent free to play WWII game on Xbox, PC and PlayStation.

Enlisted sets itself apart from other WW2 shooters with several unique mechanics and squad roles, all combining together to create what is perhaps the most reflective of a real life WW2 battle.

Whereas HLL feels like you're in a war simulator thats a bit too realistic, BFV was more like entering a WW2 action movie. Enlisted is somewhere in between - you can still dive straight into the action and mow down hundreds of enemies, but the gameplay is more tactical and strategic than BFV.

Combined Arms

Enlisted is one of the few games where you can see all different elements of an army working together in a true combined arms experience.

Players in tanks and planes will tear up enemy positions ahead of huge infantry assaults, supported by mortar squads and radio operators calling in artillery, with engineers building fortifications and fixed gun positions, moving the infrastructure forward, along with the troops.

Great for fans of WW2 weapons and vehicles

For WW2 enthusiasts, Enlisted is the go-to game. The weapons and vehicles are realistic rather than balanced. So if you are up against a German Tiger Tank, it's going to be difficult- you won't necessarily have an equivalent tank in the US army that's been boosted up to match it exactly.

Even on the completely free play through, there are hundreds of historically accurate weapons and vehicles to unlock for each faction.

Fully customised squads

Enlisted really comes into its own however when you have played a few matches and start customising and setting up your own army that you will take into battle.

Each human commander has their own mini AI squad that can either be controlled by the player directly by switching to that unit, or given squad commands such as covering a position while you advance.

As you choose whether to include a sniper, AT soldier or engineer in your squad for example, you can start to customise your own mini-army that is perfectly suited to your play-style.

For example, on my assault team I always like to include both an engineer and radio operator. This means that just before hitting an enemy position, my engineer can build a HQ spawn under the enemy's nose in a concealed location. While the rest of the team come storming in I can use my radio guy to blitz the objective with an air strike.

Battleground rich with targets

The addition of the AI squad members almost as active spawn points actually improves the battle. This really serves to pad out the overall battle ground so instead of 10 or 15 bad guys ferreting around trying to find you, you're looking at more like 100-150 enemy combatants - plenty more people for you to blast away and make yourself feel good.

There is a slightly more realistic combat mechanic on Enlisted so you can get up to 30 or 40 kills with a single bombing run or artillery strike if you get it right.

When it all works as it should after careful planning and months of unlocking various roles and abilities, the game offers more long term rewards and something to aim for. Other WW2 shooters are just standalone matches that mean nothing.

More than a typical WW2 shooter

Enlisted is more of an online WW2 campaign and you always have something that you need for your setup.

In terms of longevity, tactics and closeness to the real thing, whilst still engaging the player, Enlisted is perhaps the most enjoyable WW2 shooter to play online in 2026.
