When it comes to subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the main question is - will it be worth it compared to buying games separately? This review will attempt to answer that question by looking at the costs compared to buying games individually, and some of the unknown benefits of Xbox Game Pass.
Is Xbox Game Pass worth it in terms of cost?
There are several hundred games available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate but clearly you would not be interested in or play them all. So let's break it down in terms of the very minimum amount of games you would need to play to make it worth it.
If we pick 4 popular games on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate such as Hell Let Loose, FC25, Starfield and Forza Horizon 5, that would cost around £210 in total.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with all these games and a few hundred more is £14.99 per month or around £180 for the year. So you only need to play more than 3 games in a year to make it worth it in terms of cost.
What are some of the Unknown Benefits of Cloud Gaming on Xbox Game Pass?
Along with Game Pass Ultimate you get to play games directly through the cloud, so what does this mean in terms of the benefits for gaming?
No space taken up in storage
Do not have to wait for any downloads
Can play next gen Xbox Series X games on OLD GEN Xbox One
Can flick through games as you would with films on Netflix
Let's look at these in more detail and see how it changes the way you can play games.
Firstly, cloud gaming needs internet connection but you already needed that for online games anyway.
Playing new gen series X games on old gen console
One of the main advantages is that you can actually play Xbox Series X titles such as Hell Let Loose and UFC5 on the OLD Xbox One console.
Not everyone will have seen this in action but you can basically play hundreds of the new Series X games without ever owning the console. You link up to a Series X spec machine and get all the processing power and graphics through the cloud.
We have tested this over a period of 10 months and no real issues over a number of different genres including online multiplayer shooters.
For this reason Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is great for testing out different games to see which you like as you don't need to commit. You don't need to pay for the individual title and gamble with your money that way, you don't even need to wait to download it or take any space on your storage device.
This means you can realistically flick through hundreds of games until you find one you like, similar to checking out some different films on Netflix or another streaming service.
Is the choice of games worth it on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate?

Initially the choice of games across different genres that players may enjoy had been somewhat limited but it is getting to the stage now where nearly all games are on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with a few exceptions.
If you are into shooters there was Hell Let Loose, Red Dead Redemption, Rainbow Six Siege, Star Wars Battlefront II, Halo 5 and the whole Battlefield series - Battlefield 2042, Battlefield V and Battlefield 1 for example.
For those into sports there is UFC5, FC2025, Dirt 5, and MLB The Show 25. For fans of RPG and single player stories on Game Pass you have Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Starfield.
There's also some brilliant strategy games on Game Pass like Anno 1800, Dune: Spice Wars, Stellaris, Age of Empires 4 and Wartales.
So the choice is quite varied across the genres with a lot of major titles. In that respect there's something for everyone on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate so well worth it in terms of the number of games available.
Try Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for one month
One advantage of the subscription service is you can buy Xbox Game Pass for one month, try all the games you are interested in, then either continue the subscription next month or cancel it and purchase the few games you liked after testing them.
If you think you may only regularly play 4-5 games it's still worth it to check them out rather than waste £60 on a title and find out it's not your thing. Especially when you don't need to download the thing. Can just try it on cloud gaming then download it if you like it.
